What are door magnets?
Stateroom doors on Disney ships are metal, which means magnets stick right to them. Guests decorate their doors with Disney themed magnets, everything from character cutouts to family name signs to holiday themes.
Why do people do this?
Two reasons, really. First, it is genuinely fun and festive. Walking down a long hallway of identical doors and seeing your own family's design feels like a small celebration before you even step inside your room.
Second, it is practical. Cruise ship hallways are long and every door looks the same. A decorated door helps your kids, and honestly you too, spot your room right away.
Do I need to buy new magnets for every cruise?
Not at all. Some families, mine included, love buying a new set for every sailing. We have done Christmas themed magnets for a Merry-Time Cruise and Halloween themed magnets for Halloween on the High Seas. It has become part of how we celebrate each trip.
That said, plenty of families buy one great set and reuse it sailing after sailing. Both approaches work perfectly well. There is no right or wrong way to do it.

A few tips
Keep in mind that airlines have some rules around packing magnets, so check your airline's policy if you are flying to your embarkation port. It is also worth packing them somewhere easy to access on embarkation day, since you will want to decorate as soon as you get to your room.
Should I feel obligated to do this?
Not at all. It is a fun tradition, not a requirement. If it is not your style, your cruise will be just as magical without it.
